The Poetics of Space

In this seminar on Gaston Bachelard's classic, The Poetics of Space, translated from the French by Maria Jolas, we will (re)visit this classic text on the phenomenology of intimate space. Each week, we'll dig into two chapters of the book and consider some of Bachelard's inspirations (like Bergson, Rilke, Michelet, and Henri Bosco's Malicroix, recently translated by Joyce Zonana). Bachelard is a student and lover of literary dreamers—through and with him, we'll dream huts, shells, nests, corners, and the roundness of being itself.

This class will meet weekly on Tuesdays, May 16-June 20, from 6-8pm EDT (GMT-4) on zoom. Use the code BACHELARDSLIDING to access a sliding scale price of $150 or the code BACHELARDBUDDY to purchase two spots and get one free. Sign up here!

Windfall Room: Poem Recitations in Place at KCAI Gallery

Logo of Windfall Room, which is a drawing in which four globes or balloons are suspended on strings or straight sticks. In their midst is a mask with a sail. These are all perched on an orange rectangle.

June 23 – August 7, 2022

Public Reception & Readings:
Friday, July 22 6-9 p.m.
Reserve a free ticket here

KCAI Gallery is pleased to present Windfall Room: Poem Recitations in Place, June 23 through August 7. Windfall Room is a poetry publication & archive presenting high-quality video recitations.

The most common way to experience a poem, even on digital platforms, is through the written word. Far less common by comparison, but no less wonderful, is to experience a poem well-recited by a human. With each issue, Windfall Room publishes a poet reciting from memory one of their works in a high-quality audio/video format, filmed in a meaningful location. There is no accompanying text version of the poem other than closed captions.

“A marvelous thing happens as we watch a person give a great recitation: their own face becomes even more a threshold of meaning, and their personality becomes infused and in communion with the universe of the poem: the person and the poem are there physically transfiguring and revealing each other, as well as the space they are in. It’s pure poetry. There is nothing like it. Windfall Room is meant to be a corner of the internet where poets are invited to come, explore, and learn about this dimension of the art together, “ said Editor and Founder Nick Maione.

Artists presented include: Jericho Brown, Anaïs Duplan, David Feinstein, Sylvia Jones, Kevin Latimer, Bridget Lowe, Nick Maione, Peter Mishler, Marcus Myers, Bernadette Negrete, Julie Rouse, Zach Savich, John Sieracki, Ryan Skrabalak, BJ Soloy, Jordan Stempleman, Jermaine Thompson, Zoe Tuck, Lindsey Webb.

Windfall Room project team includes Nick Maione (Editor, Founder), Zach Savich (Editor), Jordan Stempleman (Editor), Dora Malech (Contributing Editor) and Lindsey Webb (Contributing Editor).
